USB cables and their use in the Embedded Industry

USB cables come in so much flavours that you will hardly do without it when it comes to connection between any kind of device that has the serial port of USB.
It has replaced so many of the old connection ports and cable types previously used for peripheral and computer connections.
Normally a cable should have two ends for connection of the two terminal ports but that is not always the case.
For instant, the electrical charger of so many smartphones has one end that plugs to the phone as a USB interface named 'Micro-USB A male' while the other end connects to the power outlet, yet it is a USB product.
Some other kinds of Charger have no cable but has another USB interface called female A-type USB which makes the charger to work like a computer USB port but only for power supply. You would now use the normal USB cable used for connecting phones and computers which is an A male to Micro USB A male cable to connect to your charger and phone.
But remember your charger only supplies power and not data.
Okay let us examine some of the recognized USB connection interfaces by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).

The B-style connector is designed for use on USB peripheral devices. The B-style interface is squarish in shape, and has slightly beveled corners on the top ends of the connector. Like the A connector, it uses the friction of the connector body to stay in place. The B-socket is an "upstream" connector that is only used on peripheral devices. Because of this, the majority of USB applications require an A-B cable. A-B USB cable is the type of USB cable that is used to interface and connect Arduino to the computer. The B male end interface connects to Arduino while the A end male interface connects to the computer. This is also the type of cable usedvfor some printers and many other development boards like Sparkfun products or other programmers
